Who are The Diplomats?

The Diplomats are a Toronto-based jazz trio consisting of piano, bass, and drums. We perform at weddings, anniversaries, parties and corporate events.

What type of music do you play?

The Diplomats tailor our music to your event. Generally, we play romantic jazz music for weddings and classic jazz standards for parties, but are capable of playing virtually any song. We also play classical music and pop songs.

Please see our Song List page for a list of tunes or our Samples page to hear MP3 audio samples of the band.

Where is the band from?

The band is located in Toronto, but we perform throughout the surrounding areas as well, including Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, Niagara Falls, and Guelph. We will perform at most venues in Southern Ontario upon request.

Will you travel to my event?

The band will travel 2-3 hours outside the Greater Toronto Area, so if you are in that radius, then yes.

How much do you charge?

The cost of the band depends on a few factors, primarily the location and length of the performance. Please email us or use our Request form for a quote. Please specify as much information as possible, including starting time, duration of performance, location, and venue. We will get back to you as soon as possible with a quote.

Do you play wedding ceremonies?

Yes, the band does play wedding ceremonies, and has been performing at ceremonies and receptions since 2000. We can perform a mix of classical music, romantic jazz, and pop songs for your wedding ceremony.

Do I need a real piano at my event?

No, we always bring a portable digital piano. Although a real piano is sometimes nice, many venues do not have this luxury.

How does set up work? When do you get to my event?

Generally we will arrive at the event 1 hour prior to the performance. We set up immediately (usually about 30 minutes) and then retreat until the performance should begin. This gives you the peace of mind that there won't be any commotion as your guests arrive.

When do you guys pack up?

We pack up immediately following the performance. Usually this does not disturb guests as by this time the evening is well underway. We also try to find alternate exits for removing equipment and stay quiet throughout this time. If you need to make special arrangements for us to stay longer though, please don't hesitate to ask.

Do you take any breaks?

Yes, usually we take approximately 10 to 15 minutes for every hour of performance. If you have any special requests we will gladly accommodate.

How will the band dress?

Unless otherwise instructed, the members of the band will wear suits.

Do I need to supply anything for the band?

The band will supply all their own equipment, including instruments, amplifiers, extension cords, etc. You only need to provide the space and at least one electrical outlet.

At what volume will the band play at?

The band will generally keep the volume at a comfortable level. Since there are so many factors involved (room size, number of guests, etc.) please let us know if we should adjust our volume. But rest assured, in the many gigs we've played, we've rarely been told to adjust our volume.

I've decided to hire you for my event. What next?

Once you have decided to hire us, we will send you a contract for you to sign. This will outline the performance details in addition to any other pertinent information.

How does payment work? What forms of payment to you accept?

At the time of the contract, a regular cheque covering the deposit is sufficient. The remaining payment can be made either prior to the performance or at the end of the performance by cash or cheque.

Do we need to meet in person to finalize any details?

Usually this isn't necessary, as any communication can be done by email, phone, or regular mail. However, if you find it important to meet first, arrangements can be definitely be made.

Do you always perform as a trio?

We generally perform as a trio, but also utilize a network of musicians to perform as a quartet and a quintet as well, and can also play as a duo. We are easily able to integrate a saxophone, guitarist, vocalist or other instrument into our group.

What kind of experience does the band have?

The band has been performing together regularly since September 2000. Each member of the band is an accomplished jazz musician, with many years of experience performing. Please feel free to read our quotes page for customer feedback on the band.
